How To Restart in Windows Selective Startup Mode   

 

Question 

You need to restart a computer in Windows Selective Startup mode to reduce the potential for software conflicts.   

 

Answer   

To enable the Selective Startup mode for Windows 2003 Server or XP: 

 

Note: Window 2000 does not include the System Configuration Utility

1.        Click the Windows Start button, and then click Run. The Run dialog box appears. 

2.        In the Open field, type msconfig, and then click OK. The System Configuration Utility launches:

3.        Under the General tab, enable the Selective Startup radio button, and then clear the Load Startup Items check box. 

4.        Under the Services tab, enable the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All to not start any other services that are not needed during the install process. 

5.        Click Apply, and then OK

6.        At this point, you will be prompted to reboot. After the computer has successfully restarted, you will be in Selective Startup mode. The System Configuration Utility will notify you that Windows is running in diagnostic mode, and give you an opportunity to return to Normal Startup mode via the following dialog box: 

7.        Click OK to this messagethe System Configuration Utility launches again. Click Cancel to continue. 

8.        Ensure that the Windows Firewall (Windows XP Service Pack 2 users) as been disabled. For more information on how to disable the Windows Firewall, please refer to the following Knowledge Base document:

Important Note: When you are ready to return to Normal Startup mode, return to the System Configuration Utility (steps 1 - 2 above) and enable the Normal Startup option under the General tab. Your computer will restart normally.
